Studio 3.1

Studio 3.1's aim is to explore the generative process of making in architectural design. Using these creative experimentation I designed a whiskey distillery and visitor centre, located near the Manchester Airport.

POSITION

  • User experience and inclusivity.

  • Separation between process and visitors at times for safety but then mix at times for visitor interaction.

  • Journey through the process of the whiskey distillery.

  • Flowy and connecting route through the building such as the process itself.

  • To integrate all the climate emergency design themes throughout the process of my project.

  • Incorporate biophilic design.

  • Focusing on the performance of the building

PROPOSITION

Through experimentation using sketching, physical modelling with materials such as clay, paper, fabric, foam and wire as well as taking inspiration from Midjourney AI, I finalized a conceptual response to the brief and site.

PROPOSAL

My final 3.1 building proposal was designed to create a warm and comforting atmosphere. Focused on user satisfaction, I’ve created a space where the user can feel connected to the outdoors and also the journey of the process inside. Different sensory elements have been embraced such as, the unique shadows portrayed by the copper walls, the sounds emanating from passing planes and heavy machinery in addition to scents and views of the natural green outdoors. The structure mimics the barrel grids utilized in the process while also complementing the movements found in the surrounding area - that being the flowing nature of airplanes and trees.
